Red Double-Decker Bus
One of the symbols of London is a red double-decker bus. Buses have a long and
interesting history in the capital. The first buses appeared in London in 1829. They were
pulled by three horses. Motorbuses were first used in 1899.
The Routemaster is a model of double-decker bus that was introduced in London
in 1956. The design was very popular with Londoners and tourists. The passengers
could get on and get off quickly at stops, at traffic lights and slow speeds. The
conductor collected fares when the bus was travelling.
Nowadays you can see modern red double-decker buses in London and other

Tube. Tourists like taking these buses because they can have a nice view of the city

Black cabs
London’s iconic black cabs are a symbol of London. The story of black cabs
goes back to the 17th century. In 1625 the services began with horse-drawn vehicles.
These carriages were private means of transport. But in the 1850s there appeared open
two-wheeled carts on the streets of London – they were called cabriolets.
In fact the first motor cabs appeared on the streets of London in 1903. Today the
black cab has become a cultural icon. It has appeared in countless films, books, and
artworks, symbolizing London itself. Traditionally the car has a partition inside to
separate a driver from passengers.
Drivers of London cabs are always specially trained. They must know all the city
streets and pass the test to get the license. In the future this famous taxi will probably
become electric taxis due to modern technologies.
