As you know it’s difficult to overestimate the role of
science and technology in our life. They accelerate
the development of civilization and help us in our co-
operation with nature. Scientists investigate the laws
of the universe, discover the secrets of nature, and
apply their knowledge in practice improving the life
of people.

But
every
medal
has
its
reverse.
And
the
rapid
scientific progress has aroused a number of problems.
-
These are ecological problems.
T: First, I’d like to know what ecological problems do
you know about? This scheme will help you.

T: But what is the most important problem? And what do
you think about it?

P1: I think the most important problem is endangered
animals
because
many
species
of
animals
and
birds
disappear and it’s the man’s fault who has polluted their
natural homes.
P2: I believe the most important ecological problem is
pollution because it is very dangerous for people, wildlife
and the environment.
P3: It seems to me that the most ecological problem is
dangerous diseases. Let’s take for example AIDS. There
several types of AIDS. No one has been cured up to the
present moment.
P4: To my mind the most ecological problem is drugs.
More people are abusing drugs today than in any other
time in history and many of them are youth.
T: And I’d like to add that people have always polluted
their countries. Some years ago it was not a serious
problem. But now it has become more serious.
What are the reasons for it?

It’s generally agreed that the Destruction of the
tropical forest has a major impact on the world
climate. The tropical rain forest is a natural recycler,
provider and protector for our planet.

P2: It recycles carbon, nitrogen and oxygen, helps to
determine temperature, rainfall and other climatic
conditions. It supports the most diverse ecosystem in
the world.

P 3: I fully agree with you. The forests are in danger. The
world has over 9 million sq. km. of forests. But they are
disappearing fast not only of fires. Every day we use
paper and cardboard made from wood. We use different
kinds of wood to make furniture and other things. Every
year huge forests are cut down for different uses.

P4: You can’t deny the fact that there are a lot of
wonderful animals on our planet. In the oceans there are
whales, sharks, polar bears, penguins. In tropical forests
there are snakes, jaguars, in rivers you can see different
kinds of fish and crocodiles. But many of these species
are disappearing nowadays.
T: Well done. Thank you very much. Let me mark your

P1: We are going to tell you about overpopulation. In my
opinion the world’s population is an important issue. For
hundreds of thousands of years, the human population
grew at a low but steadily increasing rate. Then, in less
than
last
200
years,
the
world
population
went
from
several
hundreds
of
millions
to
more
than
6
billion
people.

P2: I want to add this. Overpopulation is destroying our
environment,
lowering
the
standard
of
l i v i n g .
Overpopulation also causes more violence, environmental
pollution that reflects on land degradation, tropical forest
destruction,
global
warming
and
destruction
of
coral
reefs.
P3: 6 billion member society has to get a huge food
infrastructure, so society start producing genetically made
food. In conclusion I’d like to say that the planet urgently

P1: In April 1986 a catastrophe broke out 12 kilometers

сек) It was the major breakdown of the power unit at the
Chernobyl nuclear power station.
P2: As the result of the explosion of the failed reactor a
huge amount of radioactive substances was released into
the atmosphere. Later on they left the large fallout “spots”
on
the
ground

and 0,5% of the territory of Russia were contaminated.
P3: After the Chernobyl accident Belarus has become the
zone
of
the
ecological
disaster.
260,000
hectares
of
agricultural
lands
are
forbidden
to
use. Thousands
of
hectares
of
forests
are
contaminated
with
radioactive
elements. The
Chernobyl
catastrophe
has
affected
the

environment. But with the development of civilization
man’s interference in nature began to increase.

cities

smoky
industrial
enterprises appear all over the world. The by-produtcs of
their
activity
pollute
the
air
we
breathe. As
I
know
polluted air can cause illness.
P3: I agree with you. Factories emit tons of harmful
chemicals. These emissions have disastrous consequences
for our planet. They are main reason for the greenhouse
effect and acid rain.
P4: The seas are in danger. They are filled with poison:
industrial and nuclear wastes, chemical fertilizers and
pesticides.

Every ten minutes one kind of animal, plant or insect
dies out forever.
Air, water and soil are necessary for existence of all living
things.
