Reading test. The keys.
Climb every mountain…
There is a popular saying in Japan: “There are two kinds of fool. Those who
never climb Mount Everest and those who do it twice.” So who is Sir Edmund
Percival Hillary, an adventurous fool perhaps? This mountaineer, explorer and
philanthropist together with Sherpa mountaineer Tenzing Norgay became the first
climbers known to have reached the summit of Mount Everest on 29 May 1953,
led by
John Hunt. He was named by Time magazine as one of the 100 most
influential people of the 20th century.
Hillary
became
interested
in
mountaineering while in secondary school,
making his first major climb in 1939. Before the successful expedition in 1953 to
Everest, he had been part of a reconnaissance expedition to the mountain in 1951
and an unsuccessful attempt to climb Cho Oyu in 1952.
The expedition set up base camp in March 1953. Working slowly it set up its
final camp. On 26 May Hunt directed Hillary and Tenzing to go for the summit.
Snow and wind held the pair up at the South Col for two days. On the
following morning Hillary discovered that his boots had frozen solid outside the
tent. He spent two hours warming them before he and Tenzing attempted the final
climb wearing 30-pound (14 kg) packs. The crucial move of the last part of the
climb was the 40-foot (12 m) rock face later named the "Hillary Step". Tenzing
Norgay stated in his narration "The Dream Comes True" that Hillary had indeed
took the first step atop Mount Everest, despite Hillary quoting that both had
reached the summit at the same time.
They spent only about 15 minutes at the summit. Hillary took the famous
photo of Tenzing posing with his ice-axe, but since Tenzing had never used a
camera, Hillary's climb went unrecorded.
Tenzing left chocolates in the snow as an offering and Hillary left a cross
that he had been given. Additional photos were taken looking down the mountain
in order to re-assure that they had made it to the top.
News of the expedition reached Britain on the day of the coronation of
Queen Elizabeth II, and the press called the successful ascent a coronation gift. In
turn, the 37 members of the party received the Queen Elizabeth II Coronation
Medal with MOUNT EVEREST EXPEDITION engraved on the rim. Hillary and
Hunt were knighted by the young queen, while Tenzing received either the British
Empire Medal.
Following his ascent of Everest he devoted much of his life to helping the
Sherpa people of Nepal through the Himalayan Trust, which he founded. Through
his efforts many schools and hospitals were built in this remote region of Nepal.

Sir Edmund Percival Hillary once said (Slides 8,9)
“It’s not the mountain we conquer but ourselves” – how do you understand these
words? Think and try to comment on this quotation. –
How can you comment on this?
What traits of character should one have to do such a risky and difficult
task?
– Well done, but it’s not the end! You’re homework for the next lesson will be to
write an essay on the following topic: “Nowadays a lot of people are keen on
extreme sports like snowboarding, ice-climbing, mountaineering or something of
the kind. Is it a way to escape from daily routine or a way of self-expression?”
(slide 10)
Write 200-250 words. Use the following plan:
- make an introduction (state the problem);
- express tour personal opinion and give reasons for it;
Give arguments for the other point of view and explain why you don’t agree
with it;
- draw a conclusion.
Well, now let’s analyze what was the most difficult part of the lesson? Was the
video helpful? How did you manage to do the tests? Were you successful in it?
What practice do you need to make the tests better next time? What was the most
interesting?
And now relax and watch one more 1 minute video clip devoted to Edmund
Perivale Hillary. It’s a little bit mysterious … but I hope you’ll like it!(video Sir
Edmund Hillary and the Top of the World)
Now our lesson is over, see you, by!
