A Survey Report
Special skills: analyzing statistics \ interpreting diagrams
Diagrams can summarize information –
sometimes from a large amount of data
– using very little space. They often
make it easier to read and understand
the information. The type of diagram
used (bar chart, pie chart, flow chart,
line graph, etc.) depends on the main
focus of the presentation
A pie chart shows percentage of 100%

This table presents some examples of how you can change
percentages to fractions or ratios:
Here are a few examples of good wording for the largest section of
your Pie Chart:
•
It is clear that ____represents the largest portion of _____, whereas
_____ is undoubtedly the smallest.
•
Sales of _____ stood at __% in 1925, which is the majority of_____.
•
(If the percentage is around 60%) – Nearly a third…
•
(If the percentage is around 52%) – Over a half of all respondents…
Here are a few examples of good wording for
the smallest section of your Pie Chart:
•
A small fraction…
•
Exactly 30% of students…
•
(If the percentage is around 25%) Roughly a quarter of respondents
•
…whereas sales for _____ were just 10%.
•
In 1955 approximately three quarters were ____, whereas in 1960 this
had fallen to just under a fifth.
Line graphs can be used to show how
information or data change over time

Useful introductory expressions:
The graph shows / indicates / depicts / illustrates
From the graph it is clear
It can be seen from the graph
As can be seen from the graph,
As is shown / illustrated by the graph,
Example: The graph shows the percentage of children using
supplements in a place over a year.
•
Useful time expressions:
over the next... / for the following... (for the following two months...
over the next six months...)
from ... to / between ... and (from June to August... between June and
August...)
during (during the first three months...)
A bar chart is used to compare figures directly
Useful vocabulary
•
The bar chart provides information about ….
•
Now it’s obvious that…
•
Overall, ….
•
When analyzing a bar-chart, we cannot always give exact details (due
to inaccuracies of the chart), so use words around, about and
approximately when giving inexact data.
A flowchart shows the links between elements and their influence on
each other. It is best used to describe processes that contain decisions
at certain points where alternatives need to be shown.
