Teacher: Well, children today at our meeting we are going to discuss the
importance of English in our life and if it’s necessary to know English for
travelling . Nowadays English is used practically in every sphere. At our meeting
we’ll discuss how and where we can use English, we’ll act dialogues, play role-
games and examine different situations.
Teacher: So, the first question to all of you. What is English Language for you?
Say a few words, please.
Student 1: To my mind it is very important to learn foreign languages. They help
us to communicate with people from other countries, to understand their culture
and traditions. I want to travel a lot, so I must know English because it’s an
International language, it’ll help me to mix with people and make new friends.
Student 2: As for me, I learn English because it’ll be connected with my future
career: I want to be an IT specialist and I think that English is the language of the
Internet and computer technologies.
Student 3: I learn English because I like listening to English songs and understand
what they sing about. It’s really great, besides I can watch English films in English
and read English literature in the original.
Teacher: To learn English well you must work hard to learn grammar, new
vocabulary, practice English with native speakers to improve your pronunciation
etc. At school you have English classes 2 or 3 times a week. It’s not enough for
you. So many students attend optional coursers or schools or study with tutors.
Let’s speak about your Language schools.
Student 4: Personally I learn English not only at my English classes, for 5 years I
have been studying at school “ELC”. It means English Language College. There
are good professional teachers. In our group there are 6 students. Also there is a
good library with English literature, besides we have a video course where we
watch video about different problems connected with environment, pollution and
etc. It helps me much and I hope in future my knowledge of English will be of
great help for me.
Student 5: Except English classes at school I attend English school “Britannica”. I
have been studying there for 3 years. I like studying there very much, there are 8
students in our group. I attend my school 2 times a week, our lessons last for 1.20
min. At the lessons we learn to read with proper intonation, listen to CD, learn new
grammar and practice a lot doing exercises. And I want to say that I’m quite
satisfied with my progress in English.
Teacher: Now, children, let’s play a game. Imagine the situation that you want
to travel abroad. Speak about different countries you are going to visit and about
everything concerning travelling starting with visiting the tourist agency and
finishing with returning back home.
Nowadays more and more people travel abroad. And they come across with
a number of different problems. Some people prefer to travel alone, others like
with a group and a guide. A travel agent will do everything for them: he’ll advise
the place to visit, book tickets, accommodations, meals and tourist program.
We’ll see step by step what to do if you are going to travel. We will divide
into three groups and choose what country to visit. One student of your group will
be a travel agent, a representative of the company, a guide and all the rest will be
students/ tourists.
I. Choosing a travel agency and where to go
Group 1
A travel agent: Hi, I’m the representative of the “Tez Tour”. Our company invites
you to visit Australia. It’s a wonderful country to have a rest.
Guide: Are there any exotic animals in Australia?
A travel agent: Of course, you can see koala, kangaroo, wild dog Dingo and many
others. There are beautiful Safari parks where you can enjoy different activities.
Students: What cities do you advise us to visit?
A travel agent: Well, Sydney is the best place to visit. You can find many
interesting things to see such as: museums, galleries and the well- known Opera
House.
Students: O.K. We’ll think about what you’ve said.
Group 2
Teacher: The students of the second group come to “Anex Tour” and another
agent tells them about the USA.
A travel agent: We are glad to meet you at our agency. I hope you know much
about the USA. I’m sure you‘ll find many interesting things which surprise you
while travelling.
Students: OK. What cities would you advise us to visit?
A travel agent: First of all, New York, of course. It is the city of contrasts, a big
financial and business centre of the USA. Also I advise you to visit Boston; there
are many colleges and universities in it. Besides I can’t but say about San
Francisco, Los Angeles and Philadelphia. There is much to do and entertain there.
Students: O.K. We see. There is much matter for consideration here.
Group 3
Teacher: And the third group decided to visit one more agency “Coral Travel”
A travel agent : Welcome to Great Britain! We can offer you a wonderful rest at
the seaside resorts. They are so amazing!
Students: Excuse us, but we don’t want to rest at the seaside resorts. We’d like to
go sightseeing.
A travel agent: Oh, it’s wonderful! London is the best place for entertainment.
You can enjoy the beautiful sights of Big Ben, Trafalgar Square, Westminster
Abbey and many others. When are you going to visit London?
Students: Only in summer, perhaps in July, after passing all our exams.
A travel agent: Oh, it’s the best season in London. It’s warm at this time and the
weather isn’t much rainy.
Students: O.K. Our classmates have talked to different travel agents who
represented Australia, the USA, Great Britain and we’ve chosen your company.
We decided to go to Great Britain.
A travel agent: I’m very pleased you set eyes on our company. I’m sure your rest
will be unforgettable. How would you like to travel: by air or by bus?
Students: It would be exhausting to travel by bus, we prefer travelling by air.
A travel agent: Very well! You’ll arrive in Heathrow Airport and the
representative of our company will meet you there.
II. At the Airport.
Tourists: So, we’re in Heathrow Airport. Where is our guide we wonder. Oh,
we think it’s him.
A representative of the company (called Bill): Hello! I’m Bill. Are you a group
of Russian students? I’m very glad to meet you here. I hope you’ll enjoy your rest
very much.
Tourists: So do we. What shall we do next?
Bill:
First, I’ll bring you to the hotel and there Miss Black will tell you
everything about your stay in England.
Tourists: O.K. Let’s go.
Teacher: Well, children, before you go sightseeing I’d like you say what sights
you would see in London.
All students share their opinions on this theme, trying to explain why they
want to see this or that place.
III. At the hotel.
Miss Black: Our Company is glad to meet you here. Now let’s look through
the program. Firstly, I advise you to visit Brighton. It is full of ancient buildings,
amusing architecture. Then I think Hastings is worth seeing.
Tourists: O.K. When are we going to start our excursion?
Miss Black: I believe you are sick and tired now and need a rest but tomorrow
early in the morning I’ll come up on you. Have a good rest.
Tourists: Thanks. See you soon.
IV. An excursion around Brighton.
Guide: Hi! Nice to see you. Are you ready to start our excursion just now? I
advise you to go on foot. I’ll show you everything you are interested in.
Tourists: No objection. What are we going to start with?
Guide: I’ll show you everything you are interested in. Brighton is full of
sightseeing, ladies like it for beautiful shops. Hastings is beyond words.
Teacher: Well, guys, our tourists had a good time, your trip came to an end and
you came back home. You are glad to share your opinions with classmates.
V. Coming back home.
A meeting with classmates.
Students: So, our trip came to an end, we’re full of impressions and eager
to share them with our classmates (not all students visited Great Britain). Ask
questions, please!
Question 1. What impressed you most of all in England?
Student 1: I even don’t know what I should start with. There are many myths
that the British are stiff, can’t enjoy themselves and people of few words. But I
don’t think so. Love for humor and pets really run in their blood. The British are
strange, extremely composed and keep cool in the most difficult and dangerous
situations. The British respect other people’s property. It’s difficult to make friends
with the English. They are polite and sociable; they tell jokes, have fun, laugh
but never talk about their affairs and private life.
Question 2: Great Britain is called “The Foggy Albion”. Is it really so?
Student 2: English fogs are a stereotype. Before people kept fireplaces going with
coal and dense smoke from flues came in thick clouds. Sometimes everything was
obscured and people didn’t see anything. At the present time the British heat their
houses with gas or electricity and there is as much fog as in any other country.
Question 3: If we compare Red Square with Trafalgar Square which one is better?
Student 3: To my opinion Trafalgar Square is less beautiful than Red Square.
There is Nelson’s Column, 144,36 feet high (44 metres), bronze lions near it, a
beautiful fountain and several monuments. There people date, feed pigeons or just
rest. Trafalgar Square is smaller and cleaner than Red Square in Moscow but as for
me I like Red Square more because it’s the heart of our great country.
Question 4: Would you like to visit Great Britain again?
Student 4: Of course, I would. I want to visit Britain again to make new friends and
see the sights I didn’t see.
IV.
Conclusion.
Teacher: I think, guys, now you are quite aware of all things concerning
travelling: how to choose a travel company, to book tickets and stuff like that. I
hope when you are going to travel you won’t have any difficulties during your trip.
I wish you could have a pleasant journey.
So, to sum up we can say that it’s necessary to know English for travelling.
It helps us in different situations practically in every sphere of life.
Thank you for your participation.
